Holes in Leaves

Are the leaves on the plants in your beautiful pots beginning to resemble Swiss cheese? Plants in pots are especially susceptible to slimy little critters like slugs and snails, and all too often they prey on the beautiful foliage of our prized plants.

If you’ve looked all around the soil and under the leaves and see nothing but the shiny slime trails they leave in their wake, it’s time to gently turn the pot onto its side and look underneath. These pesky little critters find the cool, wet undersides of pots a perfect hideaway during the heat of the day, then slither out at night to gnaw away at our plants.

Over the years people have offered all sorts of solutions to this problem – banding pots with copper strips, diatomaceous earth on the potting soil, and even small dishes of beer they crawl into for a happy death. All of these approaches have their merit and may work for a time, but simply plucking them off the pot bottom on a daily basis is probably your best bet. Side note: If you have any ducks or chickens nearby, toss the pests their way. They absolutely love them!

Ultimately, your best strategy is to remember that these critters were here long before we came on the scene, and we are all co-inhabiters of the earth.
