Blossom Rot

Blossom rot – sounds pretty awful, doesn’t it?!? It actually looks pretty awful as well! If the ends of your zucchini or tomatoes or eggplants or peppers, look like sudden death and simply quit maturing, you may have the dreaded blossom rot many of us experience in our summer gardens.

Often times this rot is due to a lack of calcium – one of the many micronutrients needed for healthy plant growth and reproduction. A lack of calcium can also be seen in deformed fruit, funny-looking new foliage, and/or very slow plant growth.

There are of course excellent commercial products you can employ to remedy a lack of calcium in your plants, but there are some fun home- grown solutions as well. You can brew up some eggshell tea*, finely crush eggshells and mix them into the soil around the plant, or dissolve a couple of Tums into your watering can and water away.

Recipe for eggshell tea:

  • Put 15-20 dried eggshells into a gallon of boiled water.

  • Let the water cool, then drain out the eggshells and water your plants.
