October
This time of year is a great time to think about refurbishing your lawn. A bit of work now will offer your lawn a chance to strengthen its root structure, crowd out weeds with newly germinated seedlings, and come roaring back lush and green in the spring.
Lawns and their condition vary, but here are some basic steps:
Mow your lawn to 1.5”.
Dethatch and remove all dead plant matter (you can rent a de-thatcher).
Use a core aerator on the lawn.
Rake and remove all soil plugs from aeration.
Spread a thick layer of mature compost between .5” and .75” and rake it down.
Overseed your lawn about 6 lbs per 1000 sq. ft.
Contact your local nursery and ask them to recommend the right seed.
Lightly sprinkle the new seed with topsoil to prevent consumption by birds.
Lightly water twice a day (unless it’s raining).
