December

Lush, living plants may not be top-of-mind come the deep chill of December, but now is a time to consider the birds, bees, and butterflies that will visit your yard if conditions are favorable. What about gifts (for yourself or others) of platform birdfeeders for hungry avians? Birdhouses for nesting? Hummingbird feeders that draw in these magical creatures? Butterfly houses that provide safety from the wind for these delicate creatures? Bee houses for native bees that don’t sting and provide a 1000 times more pollination than European honey bees? Water features for birdbathing and quick drinks on a hot day?

If against all logic, thoughts of plants do creep into your consciousness, consider planning for natives that will readily bring in good pollinators, droves of hummingbirds, colorful butterflies, and unique migrating birds.

Great gifts for kids include books for identifying birds by both sound and physical description. Pair one of these books with a small pair of binoculars and you’ll have an active, engaged child come spring.
